of heartbreak and hope

a very personal strategic design manifesto

What is it that affects you so deeply that whenever you encounter it, you feel the need to look away? Look there.

Where is the pain in the world that you just cannot stand? Stand there.

The thing that breaks your heart is the very thing you were born to help heal.

Glennon Doyle

I wrote this strategic design manifesto as a reminder for my future self to never lose sight of what is important for me while working on various projects.

With the help of strategic design solutions, I want to provide people who are hurting with opportunities of relief – by being heard, understood and their needs and wishes acted upon. I want to do that while being close to people: the target group, the client, my team, the experts and users.

Throughout the booklet, I added in quotes that inspired me during my journey of becoming a strategic designer. I also made sure to reinforce the written content with self-made illustrations that are clean and precise, but incredibly playful. The finishing touch is the Japanese book binding decorating the spine of the book with a line of broken hearts – and holding it together, reinforcing their (symbolic) importance to my process once more.
