What connects people? Are you missing something? What are you afraid of?

For our project “fremd” we decided to ask the questions that matter to everyone. We travelled to the little German town Zeitz to find answers. The region had had many problems during the refugee crisis, which made it very interesting for our project. We were lucky to find many residents that shared their unfiltered views with us.

The question “What is freedom?” was answered with a simple “being a pensioner”. But we were also told that “Germany has problems, but love as well”.

We decided to make all of the people we asked write down their answers themselves and put them together afterwards. The magazine has a very personal topic and handwriting always tends to help with showing that to the viewer.

We also took pictures of the people we asked, but decided to use them only for collages that don´t show a person as a whole. We thought it might be easier to be honest, when the identity of the interviewed person would be protected.

We were able to display our project in the library of Zeitz and got a lot of very positive feedback by the residents themselves.
